Architecture

What makes a great building?

  • Spacious

  • Beautiful setting

  • Sturdy

  • Room-full

  • Cared for/furnished

  • Air conditioned/well heated

  • Good angles

  • If a flat, make it small but spacious and have everything you need

  • If a house, make its downstairs living room, kitchen, dining table and hallway connected with no doors because it is easier to move around. If a mansion, make it very big, very spacious, with loads of rooms and high ceilings.

  • If a skyscraper, make it very tall but make sure it is very sturdy, make it as tall as it is wide.

Architecture

The reason I am fascinated by architecture is how much time is put into it and how amazing it is.

Those fallen down buildings, imagine what they were like when they were first built - they might have been great. That’s a lot of time and devotion and people and money put in. Even though it’s a run down building, you still have to appreciate what it was and what was put in to it. And you can take them and make them great again.

I like buildings most that have great architecture - even old buildings I appreciate the style of them and the work that has gone into them, even if they don’t look flashy.

I like the ones with style like with glass that you can see through with mesh on the front. But it doesn’t matter how it looks on the outside. It matters more how it is inside the building. It might look flashy but be disgusting on the inside. I would spend more time on time inside. Like the Battersea Power Station - it matters what it does, the conditions and the part it plays. That’s what matters.

If I was to build a building I would make the frame and outside but not make it flashy. Then I would concentrate on the inside and if I had money left I would do more on the outside at the end. But I’d spend more time on the inside. What it would be like would depend on what the building was for.

Good sanitary, good lighting, great living conditions would be basic. I would build different kinds. One would be a block of flats, not amazingly flashy but affordable and nice conditions and actually maintained in and out - needs to be affordable and good. No point wasting money on trash. Then I would build custom flats for rich people. I would ask them what they want and then build that - in what proportion they wanted and if they wanted the building or furniture inside too or get their own.
